Many emerging artists are too young to remember the days when labels, publishers and the like would not even accept unsolicited material. In my day, you’d send your demo tape or CD to a label and most likely you’d never know if it even arrived, let alone get any acknowledgement that your music had been listened to.

Getting guaranteed feedback from top A&R executives, program directors, music supervisors and more is a watershed for musicians and song owners and I am proud that Music Xray is again the first to make something like this a reality.

You pay $200 and Kyra Larock will organize a 30 minute face to face meeting for you with an A&R representative of your choice from any of the following labels: Jive (Sony), Capitol (EMI) or Universal or Bad Boy. I mean, seriously, if you’re serious about your career and you think you have what it takes, why wouldn’t you leap at this opportunity?

As per my last post on this blog, I’ve been playing around with About.me for the past few days, curating my profile and checking out others’ profiles. I think About.me is really interesting. It’s fun to just flick through the featured profiles, and to just stumble upon random ones. It’s like people-watching in an airport [...]

In Ord, the locals have a special place in their hearts for the Cetak (pronounced Che-tock) family, who have always run the best local meat-cutting business. In fact, any time a family member of mine goes back to visit, it is expected they will bring back a few packages of cold cuts, steaks and hot dogs from A.J. Cetak’s Meat Market. But this holiday season I become aware that the Cetak’s have gone national with a website and national delivery network that can put this incredible product on your table no matter where you live. If you like your taste buds you have got to place an order. You won’t be disappointed.

I have already initiated the search process to replace myself as CEO of Music Xray. It’s time.

While I’m confident we can get the job done with our current team, I believe Music Xray could use the skills of a seasoned entrepreneur/executive in this space who has previously taken a company from our current stage through a successful exit. There are a few in my network to whom I’m reaching out and we’re also meeting new people. There’s no rush but sooner is better than later given all we have to do in 2011.

Music Xray is a platform used by over 600 music industry professionals to receive song submissions from artists, acts, & rights holders. The company is announcing the launch of a new song to opportunity matching service called S₂O that automatically pairs songs to opportunities.

Artists simply upload their songs at MusicXray.com and wait to be alerted when appropriate opportunities for their songs are identified. The new service is completely free and marks the first time music analysis technology has been combined with other talent-identifying tools to form the world’s first and only enhanced A&R platform.

I’ve been thinking about a clever way to describe our new Song to Opportunity (S₂O) Matching system and that’s the best I’ve come up with so far. It turns your song into an opportunity magnet.

Today we’re rolling out (in beta) what I consider to be our first tech-sexy feature – Automatic Song to Opportunity Matching; or as we lovingly call it – S₂O Matching.

Here’s how it works:

There’s a documentary that you can probably find on Pay-Per-View Movies or Movies On Demand or whatever your cable company calls them. It’s called “Collapse” and to say it was thought-provoking is an understatement. If you don’t read any further or do anything else, do yourself the favor of watching the trailer video below.

ReverbNation has teamed up with AudioLife to create the Reverb Store. This looks like a great new offering for new artists and existing artists who do not have the resources to be able to create and sell their own merchandise. As the press release states “Free Service Empowers ANY Artist to Sell Music, Ringtones, and [...]

This is an interesting article in today’s Washington Post about Facebook’s purchase of FriendFeed for $47.5 million. If the author is right and it really does give Facebook a competitive edge they didn’t have without it, I think they got it for a song. What do you think? Read the article here.
